Some final thoughts, as it looks like we won’t even make the NIT this season.

The Heels put up a good fight against Georgia Tech last night, after last weekend’s demoralizing debacle (aka the Dook game). The 3-point shots were not falling at all, especially for our designated “outside shooter” Will Graves (when your best shooter is only making shots in the 30% range, you know it’s a problem) and the turnovers…the turnovers have been our achilles heel all season. Sloppy passing, not paying attention…all signs of a young, inexperienced team. Blah blah, same story, different day, I know.

Speaking of “young, inexperienced team,” the fact that the Heels were ranked in the top 10 at the beginning of the season is absolutely laughable. Yes, we had a number of “McDonald’s All Americans.” Just because you wear that label does not mean you are going to be a superstar. It doesn’t mean you will lead your team to glory. Because as this season proved, it doesn’t mean a damn thing. Too much emphasis is placed on this distinction, which leads to OVERLY high expectations.

That being said, I did see flashes of hustle, grit and determination from Tyler Zeller and John Henson, last night as well as the past few games. It was odd to see these traits sorely lacking this season, as they are usually a hallmark of a Carolina basketball team. The level of what looked like apathy and/or cluelessness was almost too much to take. This summer needs to see Henson and Ed Davis especially EAT, SLEEP and BREATHE in the weight room and cafeteria. Seriously, put some meat on those boys. 

As for now, I’ve heard rumors swirling about transfers (Wear twins, Drew III) and how Roy has lost control of this team and there are major problems in the UNC basketball universe. As a diehard fan and alumna, this is painful and definitely not something we are used to. But what do we do? Come next season, I will be wearing my Carolina blue, drinking my Blue Cups at Ventnors, cursing Rat Face and Dook and cheering my heart out for my team. That’s what we do.
